Baby has arrived! You’re all set, you’ve booked in your newborn session and are really looking forward to it! Baby’s skin has been perfect for days, BUT the day before your session, baby’s skin becomes red and flaky. You may be able to see it on their face, hands and feet. You look at newborn photos on the internet and their skin is soooo smooth.
So….What do you do?
I know where you are coming from, you’ve been looking forward to this day for so long and you want your baby to look their best. You’re investing money into creating some beautiful photos for your home and capturing this stage in your baby’s life.
You’ll be happy to know that we can fix your baby’s skin when editing your photos. If you would rather us leave your baby’s skin as is, that’s totally fine, just let us know! We still keep skin tones looking as natural as possible and we still preserve the texture and shadows.
Here is a before and after:
Did you know..
Babies are born covered in amniotic fluid, during your pregnancy, a layer or vernix will form outside of your baby’s skin. Vernix acts as protection from the amniotic fluids. When baby is born, the fluids are wiped off their body and they go from being surrounded with fluids, to living outside the womb and being exposed to dry air. This is when baby will begin to shed their skin.
The interesting part is that premature babies have more vernix on their skin, which means they tend to peel less than babies that are born late. This flaky skin will go away on it’s own, so you don’t have to worry.
Tips to help your baby’s skin
- Give them short baths with bath oil
- Use lukewarm water, not hot
- Don’t use “soap”. Instead, use a baby cleanser
- Apply baby moisturiser
I hope this puts your mind at ease!
